We've Got Answers
Everything you need to know about Siterwell smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, from installation to compliance.
Under what circumstances can false alarms occur?
+
Cooking fumes, steam, dust, and insects can all cause false alarms in smoke detectors. Car exhaust or certain chemicals can cause false alarms in carbon monoxide detectors. Our products use smart algorithms to minimize false alarms, but we still recommend installing them in a reasonable location to avoid interference.
What type of smoke can your smoke detectors detect?
+
Using advanced photoelectric sensing technology, they can effectively detect smoke particles from both slow smoldering and fast-flaming fires, including common materials like wood, paper, fabric, and plastic.
Note: Photoelectric sensors may respond slightly slower to black smoke (e.g., from polyurethane foam burning). It is recommended to install them in bedrooms, hallways, and use them in conjunction with CO alarms.
How often should the alarms be tested?
+
We recommend testing the alarm function monthly according to the user manual. Additionally, clean dust from the alarm casing monthly to maintain sensor sensitivity.
How long does the alarm battery last? Does it need replacing?
+
10-year sealed lithium battery models do not need battery replacement. Replace the entire unit at the end of its life (10 years).
Replaceable battery models use 2 AA batteries. We recommend replacing them annually, or immediately when the alarm chirps (once per minute) indicating low battery.
How do I interconnect my alarms?
+
Please refer to the user manual for your specific model. Our wireless interconnect models (e.g., A8612B-4R) link automatically via radio frequency — no wiring needed. For hardwired models, refer to the wiring diagram in the manual or our guide videos.
Is photoelectric or ionization smoke detection better?
+
For typical homes, photoelectric is generally more stable and better at detecting smoldering fires. Ionization is very sensitive to small particles but is more prone to false alarms from cooking fumes. Siterwell primarily uses photoelectric technology for better everyday reliability.
Is the "10-year battery life" for alarms real?
+
It's the designed operational life, not a guarantee it will never chirp for low power. Environmental factors like temperature and humidity can affect lifespan. In our testing, sealed lithium batteries consistently last the full 10 years under normal residential conditions.
Why does my alarm keep going off falsely when installed in the kitchen?
+
Standard smoke alarms are not suitable for kitchens. Grease, cooking fumes, and steam can easily trigger them. Consider installing a heat alarm instead in kitchen areas.
How can I tell if it's a real CO leak?
+
If the alarm sounds continuously AND your home uses fuel-burning appliances (furnace, water heater, fireplace, stove), immediately ventilate the area (open doors/windows), evacuate everyone, and call 911 from outside.
The alarm is beeping but there's no fire. What could be the reason?
+
Low Battery Chirp: One chirp per minute — replace batteries (for replaceable models).
Malfunction/End-of-Life Chirp: One chirp every 30–40 seconds — may indicate sensor fault or end of unit life. Consult the manual or contact support.
Dust Accumulation: Try gently cleaning the alarm (vacuum or compressed air).
Where should smoke and CO detectors be installed?
+
Smoke Detector: Install on the ceiling center or within 30cm of ceiling on a wall. Keep at least 30cm from walls and light fixtures.
CO Detector: Install on a wall about 1.5m above the floor, 3–5m from combustion appliances. Do not install near windows or ventilation.
Avoid: Kitchen, bathroom, garage, dusty areas.
Can I install it myself (DIY)? What tools do I need?
+
Yes, it's simple! You need: electric drill, screwdriver, tape measure, and the included mounting bracket, wall anchors, and screws.
Steps: Mark hole positions using the bracket → Drill holes and insert anchors → Secure bracket with screws → Twist alarm onto base until it clicks.
What is the wireless communication range? How many walls can it penetrate?
+
Open area range: Up to 100 meters (328 feet).
Typical indoor range: In a standard home, the signal penetrates 2–3 standard wood-frame or drywall walls. For larger homes, place alarms in central locations.
How many alarms can be interconnected?
+
Our systems support interconnecting up to 18 devices, including smoke alarms, CO alarms, and combination units. If any one alarm triggers, all interconnected devices will sound simultaneously.
How do I connect wires for a hardwired alarm?
+
Strip length: Strip about 10–12mm of insulation from wire ends.
Wiring: Black = Line/Hot, White = Neutral, Red = Interconnect. Insert exposed copper into the terminal and tighten securely. Ensure no stray copper strands are exposed.
Can I use my old mounting base from another brand?
+
Not recommended. Wiring definitions and mounting hole positions differ between brands. Remove the old alarm and base, then use the new Siterwell base provided. For hardwired models, follow the new base's wiring diagram.
What is the difference between GS562A and A8612B-6AR?
+
GS562A: Smoke detection only, hardwired (AC 120V).
A8612B-6AR: Combination Smoke + Carbon Monoxide detection, hardwired with a built-in 10-year lithium battery backup. Offers dual protection — ideal for comprehensive home safety.
Can the 10-year battery in the GS525A really last a full 10 years?
+
Yes. The GS525A has a built-in, non-replaceable sealed lithium battery rigorously tested to support 10 years of operation. After 10 years, the detector emits an "end-of-life" chirp, at which point the entire unit should be replaced.
Is the A8612B-4R (wireless interconnect) simpler to install than wired versions?
+
Yes, especially for retrofits and older homes. Simply install on the ceiling/wall — no wiring needed. They automatically interconnect via radio frequency, saving significant installation time. Ideal for apartments or older homes where running new wires is difficult.
What batteries does the GS509A use?
+
We recommend high-quality alkaline AA batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries, as their unstable voltage can affect performance. Replace annually, or immediately when the low-battery chirp sounds.
My house doesn't have pre-wired interconnect lines. Can I use wireless interconnection?
+
Yes! Wireless interconnect models like the A8612B-4R require no dedicated interconnect wire. They link all alarms via radio frequency — perfect for older homes or rentals. When one activates, all sound simultaneously, meeting modern interconnection requirements.

What safety certifications have your products passed?
+
Different products carry different certifications, including UL 217 (Smoke Alarms), UL 2034 (CO Alarms), ETL listing, and California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) approval. Check the individual product page for specific certifications.
My state requires interconnected alarms. Do your wireless products meet that requirement?
+
Yes. Siterwell wireless interconnected alarms meet modern building codes. When all alarms are interconnected, one trigger activates all units, fully complying with interconnection requirements in most US states. Our products are UL 217 and UL 2034 certified.
Do I need to install alarms in every bedroom?
+
Per NFPA standards, we recommend:
• One inside each bedroom
• One in the hallway/area outside each sleeping area
• At least one on every level of the home (including the basement)
• CO alarms near each sleeping area
How loud is the alarm? Can it wake a sleeping person?
+
Our alarms reach over 85 decibels, loud enough to wake most sleeping people. For individuals with hearing impairments, we recommend auxiliary alarms with strobe lights.
What should I do after the alarm sounds?
+
Smoke alarm: Immediately follow your fire escape plan — stay low, cover your mouth/nose with a wet cloth, evacuate quickly. Call the fire department from outside.
CO alarm: Open doors/windows for ventilation, evacuate to fresh air outdoors. Call the gas company or fire department to investigate the CO source. Do not re-enter until the problem is resolved.
