From Donation to Protection: 200 Michigan Families Receive Smoke & CO Alarms Through Siterwell-NCOAA Partnership

Last November, during National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month, Siterwell partnered with the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association (NCOAA), donating 200 smoke and carbon monoxide combination alarms to support vulnerable households across Michigan.

This May, that pledge became reality on the ground.

Through a massive, coordinated community installation effort in Jackson, Michigan, all 200 donated alarms have now been successfully installed in local homes—providing vulnerable families with immediate, reliable protection against fire and the "silent killer."

Turning a Donation Into Real Protection

The installation effort brought together the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association (NCOAA), the City of Jackson Fire Department, the American Red Cross, MI Prevention, and Siterwell, all working toward a shared goal: making homes safer for local families.

Throughout the initiative, volunteers and safety professionals visited homes across the community to install alarms and share important home-safety information with residents. The project demonstrates what can happen when community organizations, public-safety agencies, and industry partners work together to reduce barriers to life-saving protection.

Helping Families Stay Safe From Two Common Hazards

Carbon monoxide (CO) remains one of the most overlooked household hazards in the U.S. Because it is invisible, odorless, and tasteless, it can overcome a household before anyone realizes there is a leak. According to data from the NCOAA, CO poisoning sends over 100,000 Americans to the emergency room each year.

At the same time, residential fires continue to pose a significant safety risk in communities across the country.

Unfortunately, many high-risk households still lack the proper detection technology. By providing and installing combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms at no cost to residents, the initiative helps ensure that more households have access to early-warning protection against both threats.

A Lasting Commitment to Safer Homes

For community safety organizations, awareness is only part of the solution. Access to protection matters just as much.

"Seeing this initiative come to life in Jackson is incredibly rewarding," said a Siterwell spokesperson. "It’s one thing to donate alarms, but seeing them actively installed by local firefighters and volunteers to protect real families is what makes this work meaningful. We are proud to stand alongside the NCOAA and Michigan safety leaders."

While the installation effort has been completed, the need for fire and carbon monoxide safety education remains ongoing. Siterwell remains dedicated to raising CO awareness and supporting community-led safety programs across North America through education, local partnerships, and reliable technology.
